Achieving best practice visual contrast
Selecting colour for any commercial painting project can be a daunting task. To help you we have created 24 ready-made colour schemes developed from the most popular selling Glidden Trade colours. The schemes have been organised into four themed groups. Each group is recommended for a different type of environment or style of decor, but can be used anywhere.
How the schemes work
Each Glidden Trade colour scheme featured here has been organised so that you can easily follow the DDA design guidelines as identified in the Building Regulations Approved Document part M. These guidelines suggest that a suitable visual contrast will be achieved if the difference in LRV between adjacent critical surfaces including walls, doors, ceilings and floors is a minimum of 30 LRV.
- LRV (Light Reflectance Value) is a measure of how much light is reflected by a colour. LRV is measured on a 99 point index. The higher the LRV, more light is reflected meaning the lighter the colour appears.
- For an easy reference guide to colour selection, the LRV of each shade is clearly identified in this guide.
In the example on the right hand side we have used Viking on the stairs which has an LRV of 23 and Angora on the main walls, which has an LRV of 85, meaning that there is a sufficient visual contrast between adjacentcritical surfaces as recommended
