A range of Glidden Trade paints has been used in the external refurbishment of The Vallum pub in Dumpling Hall, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, after it triumphed in the brand's national 'Paint and a Pint' competition to win a £2,000 makeover. Glidden Trade Undercoat and Glidden Trade High Gloss were used in the dramatic transformation, helping to give the pub a new lease of life.
The Dumpling Hall pub achieved the top prize after judges were impressed with its efforts in the face of adversity. After previously facing closure in 2009, and with the recession and changes in VAT taking its toll, the makeover was just what the landlord needed to drive business forward. As such, the main priority for the project was to revamp and improve the aesthetics of the front elevation of the pub where the existing paint had notably faded.
As part of the prize, The Vallum landlord, Danielle Simpson, received expert colour and paint advice from Glidden Trade. Furthermore, the brand also arranged for all the redecoration work to be completed by professional local applier, AVS Nationwide Decorators Ltd, further supporting local businesses.
When specifying the ideal paints for the establishment, it was important to select products that would offer a high quality, durable finish, and which also complemented the existing colour scheme. Steve Bird, Contracts Manager at AVS Nationwide Decorators Ltd, explains: "After examining the exterior of the pub, it was clear that it needed a lot of preparation before painting started. After major work to the doors and windows and dry scraping to the fascia boards and cladding, we needed a good undercoat to ensure we were able to minimise surface imperfections and achieve a long lasting finish. Therefore, we applied Glidden Trade Undercoat to the front and side fascias of the building to protect the wooden panelling, so it would be ready for the top coat."
Glidden Trade Undercoat, which is suitable for both interior and exterior substrates, provides excellent coverage and performance, so was the ideal choice to produce a strong paint film for the wooden fascia panelling.
Two coats of Glidden Trade High Gloss were then applied for the final stage of the renovation. Created to provide a tough, durable finish, Glidden Trade High Gloss offers good opacity as well as an excellent gloss finish. It is also available in over 3,000 colours meaning that the existing colour scheme could be closely replicated.
Steve Bird continues: "We applied the High Gloss in a striking shade of red. It was really easy to use and the high gloss sheen looks outstanding. It has made a massive difference to the appearance of the pub and while we were working, local residents continually commented on how much nicer the pub is to look at.
"Being selected to undertake the work for the 'Paint and a Pint' makeover has been a great opportunity for us to help out the pub and the local community, and it has really benefited our business too."
Commenting on the finished result, Danielle Simpson, from The Vallum, concludes: "We can't be thankful enough. The makeover has given the pub a much-needed boost and has been a fantastic way to renovate our business. We were really keen to give the exterior a fresh lick of paint and make sure the community knew we were here to stay."
