Glidden Trade Acrylic Wood Primer Undercoat review by Lynx Decorators LTD
This week we have been reviewing the Glidden Trade Acrylic Wood Primer Undercoat. Its not everyday that we get to use a product that exceeds expectation. So what did we do?
The Test:
We have been prepping and painting untreated wood skirting and architrave in a new build property. We tested the Glidden Trade Acrylic Wood Primer Undercoat at room temperature and applied to surfaces using a brush and small roller.
The Product:
The Glidden Trade Acrylic Primer Undercoat is designed to replace the need to prime and undercoat seperately prior to applying the finish. The 2 in 1 idea, is a good labour saver and with quick drying times (approx 2 hours at room temp) can cut the time spent on projects. The container is a good size pot with a strong carry handle. The lid is a simple lift edge and remove system, so their are no tags to remove and the lid snaps firmly shut after use. The product is currently only available in white, which for our purpose of testing was ideal as the final finish was a White Satinwood.
The Feel:
We had the paint on the brush and found it had good movement when applied to the surface. The feel you got through the brush was similar to any good water based paint such as vinyl matt. You can tell their is something working its magic within the paint. Our Decorator described it as "somewhere between applying emulsion and PVA glue" their is a sheen to the application that helps the brush glide along, something that can be a drag (excuse the pun) on porous surfaces as it is often the case that the paint is 'sucked' into the surface and drying up the brush.
The Coverage:
The coverage is excellent. It dries a brilliant white colour and does absorb nicely into the surfaces.
Applying a finish:
The product was touch dry in approx 40 mins, we did leave it the recommended 2 hours before applying another coat. We where able to give a light sanding to the surfaces prior to the finish and this paint stood up well to this. Our finish of Dulux Satinwood (White) settled nicely over the Glidden Trade Acrylic Primer Undercoat.
Final Thoughts:
Great product and well priced. Coverage is excellent and you can stretch this quite far. As a decorating company its a product that is definately worth keeping in stock. It truly does what it set out to do, it primed and it undercoated. Its forgiving if you get a little heavy handed and with it being water based, spillages and brush care was dealt with by means of some warm water.
Colour range could be improved to include a grey colour. For the darker paint finishes.
Our Rating:
9/10 - Definately a great buy. You can buy cheaper but this is a 2 in 1 product and drying times are really good.
